Form Follows Function

Saturday, July 01, 2006

I guess I should get down to reviewing the project that has been up on my deviantART since aeons ago...

First project in architectural design this year, also took the least effort to complete... wish other projects were less stressing like it. The objective: triggering a desire for architecture to a regular person by means of a poster with a quote by a famous architect on an A2 sized sheet. Easy peasy.

'Form follows function' quoted by Louis Sullivan concords with his belief in modern architecture. (Modern in architectural terms is defined as minimalistic plain looks - often results in ugly boring buildings). Of all the quotes to choose I picked the hardest and one I disagree with...

At any rate, during the whole duration of the creation process, my tutor seriously gave me hell for a number of reasons.

1. He's a postmodernist
2. He's intimidating
3. I was too defensive (I intimidated him...)

Ugh, I'll keep my tutor stories for another day. Anyway, the poster was meant to be simple with a simple floor plan shaped after an eagle (eagle was given function to fly and form came after get it?) so you get this whole quote - architecture link going on. And if you're wondering how I got those edges so sharp with spray paint I had to tape all the edges round it with masking tape including the ones on the eagle. I actually had to do that twice since my tutor 'hinted' I should change my design slightly. Yes I'm mad, and you'll find with my later projects I get madder.

Come crit time (first crit with that) my tutor STILL disagreed with me (after ALL my ramblings) and the other tutor just didn't get it... LIKE WTF IT'S SIMPLE!!! To keep it short it wasn't a nice crit... then again, all crits (except one :) stay tuned for that) really suck.

Stuff I learnt in this project:

Never do something you don't believe in

Never disagree with your tutor unless your 100% sure you can justify it (even then it's still safer to just bow and nod)

Always find fault in your own work no matter how ridiculous

Spray paint + masking tape rocks

Source Version 2

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Lo and behold, the ownageness of all that is holy about CSS.

Bigger text, minimalistic wider two column layout, easier navigation, easier on the eyes, more relative to site purpose, much much simpler coding... Welcome to version 2 :)

Expect slight changes (or not) in the near future (distant).

Revamped Site

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

This blog is now a record of study of my works in architecture, as well as my life as a student of architecture... I'll be adding the projects I've done in trimester 1 2006 as time passes, and maybe a small statement of what I was trying to achieve in each. Updates depend on the time I have as a student, which is little, but I'll try and make time anyways. I'll be putting up most of my pictures and works on deviantart, since they host really huge pictures (even if I do still have to downsize some of my pictures). You will find thumbnails on this site with a link to the high-res ones on deviantart (and I do mean high-res).

Hope you enjoy it, and hope this site stays alive this time lol!

About Me
